Greyhounds Homed

Since the Romford Greyhound Owners Association have maintained their own kennels, many happy owners have sent us photographs of their adopted animals. It is satisfying that the work by our volunteers has created new homes for many retired Greyhounds and this web page has been developed as a scrap book to show these animals in their new environment. We welcome pictures of such animals homed by the R.G.O.A. and we will display them here. Greyhounds when settled in their new homes give countless hours of amusement, it is a new type of life for all of them and the photographs below should give you an insight into how retired Greyhounds settle into domesticated life.    (Last updated 1st June 2008)

Ben (racing name Stamford Pride, May 2001 dog) and Honey (racing name Taxing Blonde, April 2002 bitch) live happily with Cris & Steve Gillespie on Canvey Island. Both homed in 2004.  (added June 2007)
Ben and Honey, they live with a cat as well as you can see.
Ben and Honey, lovers of sand as do all retired greyhounds, about to set out on the SAUNTON SANDS holiday sprint, 4/6 Ben, 6/4 Honey
Honey the winner!!  Ben found found an empty deck-chair.
Honey and the cat, strange bedfellows

Ben, Honey & friend   WHAT A GREAT PICTURE to promote greyhounds in the Home !!!   (Added June 08)
In January 2007, Princess was homed to Mr & Mrs Hewes in Canvey Island. Registered as Alrita Princess, a Feb 2005 bitch, the owners are acquainted with Cris & Steve Gillespie and here Princess is with Honey.      (Added April 2008)
Princess does not mind whose bed she rests in.,
Lilly (Racing name of Fifi) is a Sept 2004 bitch who lives happily & comfortably) with Sheena Clarke in Croxley Green in Hertfordshire.    (Added June 2007)

Fawn June is a June 2002 fawn bitch who lives happily with Tony & Tracy Goddard in Benfleet. Homed in April 2007, looks like she likes being read a night time story.   (Added June 2007)
After listening to Tracy's story, obviously it has worked, out like a light, though we hope Fawn June does not get cold feet!
Some new photos of Fawn June from Tony & Tracy, evidently June has taken to use the sofa to keep an eye on the cats (& maybe foxes) in the garden
  June 'on lookout duty'
Lookout duty is tiring, so June uses the sofa for a far more relaxing purpose.
Patsy (racing name Rosejack Patsy, March 1995 bitch) lives happily with Richard & Joan Wilson in Dagenham. Homed in 1997 after a short racing career, it did not take her long to settle in and the picture demonstrates her favourite position. For a 12 year old bitch, she is still lively & alert, the legs are not quite as mobile as they used to be but keeps new boy Syndol on his toes..     (Added March 2007)
Syndol (Racing name of Rhincrew Syndol, Nov 2002 Dog) came to live with Richard & Joan Wilson in Dagenham in December 2006 after 77 races. He lives happily with Patsy and did not take long to grab his spot.

Daisy (racing name of Insomniac) a June 1997 bitch was the first greyhound Cheryl Glover adopted from our kennels but sadly Daisy passed away in January 2007. A loving greyhound, she became a PAT dog in her later life visiting hospitals & drug rehabs.     (Added June 2007)
Here is a nice story that ends happily. A couple of years ago Dee & Tony Moore assisted the RGOA by fostering some greyhounds in their home in Stanford le Hope. Tassy (Lurriga Castle Sept 02 dog (& Kerry) were 2 of the dogs they cared for. Unfortunately Tony's job took him away to the Midlands (near Wolverhampton). Tassy (& Kerry) were subsequently homed locally (featured originally on this website) but it did not work out. After Dee & Tony moved to a new house from rented accommodation , they noticed Tassy & Kerry were available for homing again. In early March 2008 they drove down to the kennels and took them back to live in the Midlands, a story that has turned Full Circle.    (Added March 2008)
Kerry (Champagne Kerry, Feb 02 brindle bitch) settled in like she has been there all her life along with Tassy (above).
Dee & Tony reckon they have settled in like Tassy & Kerry have never been away.  To me it looks like they have taken over, maybe Dee & Tony sleep on the floor now !!
Jonnie (racing name of Next Stop Vegas) a May 2003 dog  now lives happily & comfortably with Donna Gunn in Dagenham.  Donna says that he loves nothing better than sunbathing in the garden.      (Added June 2007)

Jason (racing name Jasons the Dad, Jan 2001 dog) lives with pickle at the home of Kerri Marsh along with Pickle. As the racing owner of Jason, the Webmaster was pleased to see him get a good home in May 2003.
Britney (racing name of Britneys Special, May 2003 bitch) playing with a pot in he garden of Donald Church, Broomfield, Chelmsford just after being homed in Nov 2004, at 18months old.            (Added September 2007)

A couple of years later, Britney found playing in the garden too much and preferred the chair, watching the TV.
Another nice story, in Jersey there is a gentleman called Malcolm Hickmott who helps the homing organisations on the mainland by taking the oldest dogs. He has helped the R.G.O.A. on a couple of occasions by taking an old dog (Paddy, name of Misty Reflection was one) and the photo shows a typical group of Greyhounds with an Alsatian for company.

I believe at present he has 10.      (Added September 2007)

It is always nice to see a dog & bitch homed together at the same time, Doc (racing name Bowmers Doc, Oct 2001 black dog) & Precious (racing name Airtech Precious, Oct 1999 white bitch) homed with Mr. A Symmonds in Dagenham in Sept 2004.  Looks like they are great mates.     (added September 2007)

Bobby (racing name of Bobby Blueyes, Sep 2001 dog) lives happily with Dawn Butler in Benfleet, since Nov. 2005. He has female company, Irene, he looks very comfortable , must have had a hard day.         (Added September 2007)

Lady (racing name of Airlock Lady), Sept 2000 bitch, is another contented greyhound living happily with Gareth & Lisa Thompson in Southend on Sea since October 2006. After 62 races at Romford, her owner's photographs show how much she is enjoying her retirement.    (Added July 2007)
I always feel that when you see such a photograph of a greyhound asleep on its back, you wonder why the others continue racing.

LADY, Is this not luxury !!

This is a lovely story.  After 2 Years & 3 months at our kennels, it is very rare that greyhound is picked. But Trooper (racing name of Velvet Trooper), a Nov 2000 fawn dog has proved an happy exception. Now living with Carol Batstone in Dagenham (from August 2007), it proves that somewhere there is a home waiting all retired greyhounds. A contented life at last for Trooper.     (Added August 2007)
Trooper has even got his own pillow.
And even a mate called Jake
Ricky (raced as Rickys Laser) is a Black Sept 2000 dog who lives happily with Lorraine & Bradley Harris in Dagenham. Homed in March 2004 (he raced at Romford under the ownership of the website master). He suffered a serious stomach problem in 2005 which caused much pain to the owners but due to the their care & attention, Ricky survived and as you can see is living life the greyhound way, completely uninhibited.    (Added August 2007)
Ricky enjoying a quiet snooze after his trials & tribulations
The owners say that Ricky loves a cuddle, looks like he has developed X-Ray eyes.
From this photograph, looks as if Ricky has taken to fishing, hunting for worms ?
One of the attractive parts of the Greyhound torso is the head, REGAL is the word that comes to mind, Ricky is no exception
Daisy (Racing name of Dublin Daisy) is a black & white May 2005 bitch who in July 2007 was homed with Melanie Jennings in Collier Row. The owner says that she has settled in well with the three other dogs & 4 cats.   This is John, (raced as Vigorous John, a veteran of 130 races) he lives happily with Michelle Richards in Dagenham, since Jan 2007. Like all greyhounds, he has adapted to the slower & more comfortable way of life.    (Added November 2007)
Here John is considering whether he wants a cuddle or a Coke.
Old habits die hard, John practising with the static cuddly toy!!
Drummer (raced 51 times as Dundrum Byway) is a Black & White 2003 dog, homed in Aug 2007 to Lisa Pewsey in Leigh on Sea, it looks like Drummer has developed a friendship with a doppelganger !!     (Added September 2007)
Star (survivor of 123 races as Izita Star) is a black Nov 1999 dog who lives with Guy & Jaime Whistler in Westcliff on Sea since Nov 2006. He looks comfortable, i doubt if he will leggit.   (Added September 2007)
This is a nice story. Blue (registered name of Pauls Ollie) is a Oct 2002 blue dog who entered our kennels in May 04. Blue had his own views on life and just when it looked like the kennels were to be his permanent way of life, Kay Felice & daughter Rebecca who had taken a shine to Blue and who walked him regularly , took a chance and adopted him (July 2007). The owners say its like he's been a  fixture forever. He has a new friend already.  So there is always hope for the kennel 'long termers'       (Added October 2007)
Blue says 'much more comfortable than a wooden kennel bed'
Blue says 'inconsiderate whoever took my pillow, how can i sleep !!'
As an owner of a racing greyhound, it is always nice to see one of your retired dogs homed, particularly if you had fond memories of her racing career. I owned Seagrave Susie (a lively 2001 black & white bitch) who gave me my greatest racing moment and it was so nice to see her homed to a Mr. Antony Beavington in Hackney after what seemed an eternity in our kennels. She joined her new owner in July 2007 and has become a big hit, particularly in this black & white photo that shows with her rosette after winning Dog of Show award at Shoreditch Market.     (Added December 2007)
Susie in Victoria Park with a friend and the owner.
Susie at the end of a long day of breakfast, sleep, short walk, dinner, more sleep, another short walk, tea time treat, TV etc, what a tiring day.    HAVE A GOOD RETIREMENT, SUSIE, you deserve it.
This is Lady (racing name of Cappadonnel Lady, March 2001 brindle bitch) sharing life with Rex. Rex lost his other greyhound friend in Feb 2007 but Lady (from March this year) has filled the void and they are inseparable. They live with Louise & Mick Scott in Westcliff on Sea.  Lovely to see, are they dancing cheek to cheek ??     (Added December 2007)

Sonny was homed in August 2007. Isn't nice to see greyhounds happy in a group.    (Added December 2007)
Cheeky (registered name of Padstow Pet) is a Oct 2004 white & black bitch happy with her new friends, now living with Natalie Qyshko and her 2 sons and Terry Crawford in Basildon. Homed in December 2007, what a Xmas present for Cheeky!  (Added December 2007)

Always amazes me, the 'standard position of a relaxed greyhound'.  I cant do it, i keep losing my balance !!
I reckon that Blondie & Lady are playing musical chairs but somebody has nicked the chair !!
In February 2008, some 14 week old pups were homed from our kennels. One white (with a black patch) pup named Doc (now known as BINX) was homed with the Sharp family in Shoeburyness.   and another cuddle.

Bluebell (formerly Blue Gunner, a Apr 2004 black bitch and a survivor of 67 races at Romford) now lives with Mrs M Jones in Canvey Island.  Homed in November 2007, she has a mate that looks very like a Dachshund.    (added May 2008)
If you did not know different, it could well be Bluebell & offspring !!
Nutta (raced with the rather unusual name of Knockembacknutta) is black Nov 2002 who is enjoying life with her new owners Mr & Mrs Stoner in Canvey Island, since Nov 2007.  Her racing name surely looks inappropriate now.!! (added May 2008)
Nutta likes the personal touch as well.
Mr & Mrs Stoner are aiding the RGOA by fostering Dino (Coolagorna Din) whilst a new home is being sought, Dino having been returned after a marriage breakup. He looks happy with his new mate, if only temporary.

STOP PRESS, Mr & Mrs Stoner have decided to keep Dino (June 2008), Nutta is really happy.

Mr & Mrs Pine homed Carden Amber in February 2008, a 2003 fawn bitch, and Amber looks alert in the local woods, 'where are those squirrels !!'  (Added June 08)
