Two big wins seal productive weekend…

9-March-2010

The Wightlink Raiders continued their recent good form over the weekend bagging another four points in back-to-back games.

Saturday saw the Streatham Redskins descend on Ryde Arena, and for the Raiders it turned out to be a high scoring affair with captain Danny Hughes alone netting five goals for his team.

It was Streatham that got the game off to a flying start with their first goal just over three minutes into play, sending their noisy travelling support into overdrive. Andrew Robinson proved that the previous weekends scoring streak had been no stroke of luck as he converted on a pass from Alex Murray and Jeremy Cornish to get the Raiders on the scoreboard moments later. The following three minutes would see the Island side hit the back of the net another three times, the first through Danny Hughes with the second from Stewart Tait with James Udell and Toby Cooley picking up the assists. The Raiders were gifted their fourth goal of the night after referee Rene Ross was forced to award Danny Hughes a penalty shot resulting from a tripping call on Streatham.

The second period saw much of the same one way traffic in favour of the Raiders with head coach Cornish netting on of his own at 26.45 and Danny Hughes converting twice more to end the period 7-1.

Streatham would strike again early in the final period, but it was to be their last of the evening with no answer for the Raiders continued offence. Andrew Robinson and James Udell would both add to the home teams impressive goal tally within the final six minutes of the game before the eventual man of the match Danny Hughes closed the game with a goal in the final minute ensuring the Raiders took the 10-2 win at the final whistle.

The Wightlink Raiders travelled to Haringey on Sunday for their final meeting of the season with the Greyhounds. Despite having played the night before the Raiders were still able to secure a convincing 8-2 win as their confidence continues to grow heading into the upcoming playoffs.

This weekend will see the Raiders take on league leaders the Invicta Dynamos at Ryde Arena on Saturday before heading to Streatham on Sunday for one last meeting with the Redskins before the season end.
